Hikkaduwa is located on the south coast of Sri lank around 98 km on the south of Colombo. The word Hikkaduwa was originated using two words that is Shipaya and Kaduwa, which together means the sword of knowledge. Hikkaduwa beach is labeled as one of the best surfing site in Sri Lanka and Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary which is located a few meters away from the shore. The best time to travel to Hikkaduwa is the period come from November to April, when the weather is dry. Ocean is stormy from May to October. Some hotels even close during that period, but sunbathing and tours aren’t prohibited. The conditions here are great for all kinds of visitors. But don’t leave your children unsupervised if you decide to bring them, as the underwater currents near the beach can be quite dangerous.
Tourists can choose between hotels of various types. There are cheap hostels and luxurious hotels with 5-star service. The best option is staying at a family hotel or at a private villa. There are many different shops and stalls with cheap prices around the hotels. If you want, you can dine surrounded by the sound of live music, tourists like to visit the numerous local restaurants. Tourists buy the famous local batik, fruit, clothes and souvenirs on Galle Road that stretches across the whole town. There are many workshops and jewellery shops. A drawing from the local gallery will make a great souvenir.
How to reach Hikkaduwa
- The Bandaranaike International Airport is around 140 km from Hikkaduwa and it takes around 2 hours travel by highway. You can take a uber taxi or airport taxi when there.
- Take bus 187 from Airport to Colombo.There are lots of regular buses that go to Hikkaduwa from Colombo. You can find from luxury to semi-luxury and regular buses from Colombo central bus stand.
- Hikkaduwa has its own railway station. There are lots of trains that go to Galle or Beliatta. All of these trains halt at Hikkaduwa. You can purchase 1st, 2nd or 3rd class tickets.
Encounter the underwater world at coral sanctuary and admire a reef rich in colorful coral formations. The water over the reef is never more than 3m or 4m deep. You can explore the water by boat or snorkel. Foliaceous Montipora species dominate the coral reef. Encrusting and branching species are also present. Faviidae and poritide corals are contained in the inshore areas of the reef in massive colonies. Corals of 60 species belonging to 31 genera are recorded from the reef. The reef also recorded over 170 species of reef fish belonging to 76 genera. Because of the 2004 tsunami some coral and fish in the area have died in the recent years. However the sanctuary still shows plenty of magnificent flowering coral formations and you can see the turtles around.
Foreign and local tourist come to see the famous “coral gardens” of Hikkaduwe, for the tourist who doesn’t like to get their feet wet glass bottom boats are available while others snorkel to reach them which are filled with brightly coloured corals and marine life.

Hikkaduwa is one of the most developed surf tourist towns. Constant smooth waves and flat sea bottom without dangerous parts attract surfers to this resort. Those who never surfed before can take a course right here.These are best surfing spots in Hikkaduwa and waves can be 3ft to 10ft when they are working.

Snorkeling in Hikkaduwa provides a thrilling experience to the visitors with underwater beauty. The monsoon begins in the south-west location from May which continues till November. In those monsoon days, the snorkeling is very dangerous at the coastal areas. Moreover, if people want to snorkel with the turtle, the best time to visit the beaches is mid-day.
